Opened in 1933, under orders from Heinrich Himmler, Dachau was the first concentration camp opened in Germany under the Nazis. Initially created to detain political prisoners, Dachau quickly grew into a network of nearly 100 sub-camps and held Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and foreign nationals. Prisoners performed back-breaking labour and lived in constant fear of SS brutality. At least 32,000 people died in the camp that became the blueprint for all subsequent camps that followed.
This 4-hour tour with a vehicle transfer visits the concentration camp memorial at Dachau.
You will be met by your guide and driver at your hotel, or a pre-arranged pick-up point of your choosing, and transferred to the memorial site at Dachau. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes.
Upon arrival you will head first to the visitor’s center to watch a brief video presentation that will help contextualise your visit. We then pass through the camp’s gates beneath the chilling words ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ (‘work will set you free’) to explore the grounds of the main camp. You will spend time exploring the excellent exhibition, stand in the roll call area, see barracks in which prisoners lived, and walk the halls of ‘The Bunker’ – a separate block used for solitary confinement and the housing of ‘special prisoners’. You will also visit various memorials and burial sites, and also the remains of Dachau’s gas chamber.
Your expert guide will provide a sensitive, in-depth commentary throughout and then at the end of the tour they will accompany you on the drive back to your hotel, or to a drop-off point of your choosing.
You will be picked up at your hotel, or a prearranged meeting point, by your professional, local guide and driver.
